On September 1, the Jewellers Association of Australia announced industry stalwart Fred Neuman as the first recipient of the JAA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Accepting the honour during the JAA Australasian Jewellery Awards, Mr Neuman was surrounded by his family who were clearly proud of his industry recognition.

The Award has been introduced by the JAA to promote excellence in the jewellery industry and will become the highest honour that the JAA will bestow on one of its members.

Neuman has been a member of the JAA member for over 20 years.

He opened his first jewellery store in Kings Cross in 1961 – throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s the store became a landmark for those wishing to invest in unique pieces of jewellery.

It also boasted clientele such as Sir Elton John.

In the late 1970’s he began importing and distributing some of the world’s most premium quality jewels to prestigious jewellers around the country.

He, and his business, soon became known for supreme quality and gained an unsurpassed reputation amongst the Australian jewellery industry.

Whilst wholesaling, he and his wife fell in love with the beauty of natural coloured diamonds.

With a background in wholesaling, he was quick to establish strong ties with the Western Australian Argyle Diamond Mine, the largest producing pink diamond mine in the world.

Within no time, he was established as coloured diamond connoisseurs, with the largest selection of and knowledge about natural pink coloured diamonds in the country.

Today, his son and daughter have established their own mark on the jewellery industry.

A true gentleman and stalwart of the industry.

JAA President, Selwyn Brandt said “The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises a true champion within our industry. We were overwhelmed with the support of this new initiative.”

The Award will be presented biennially to coincide with the JAA Australasian Jewellery Awards. To be nominated the person must:

  • Have held JAA membership for10 or more consecutive years
  • Exhibited outstanding leadership or sustained contributions to the industry
  • Posses exceptional personal integrity and highest standards
  • Be willing to serve as a role model to their peers
